Why you should NEVER work for free

So often, I get asked the same question “Should I offer [an insane] discount because I’m new? Should I work for free?”

Well, let me ask you this:
→If you were to leave your corporate job right now, would you take a new one for free?

→If you were to switch from one job to another, would you take an enormous pay cut?

Probably not.

Now don’t get me wrong. I want you to feel confident in what you’re charging. So if you realize that in order to keep up with your current salary, you’d have to charge more than what you’re comfortable with, then that’s a different story.

But if you feel like you have to charge little to nothing just because you’re “new,” well then ask yourself this:
- Is your previous work experience worth nothing?
- Is your education worth nothing?
- Do you have zero work experience related to what you’re doing?
- Do you have zero life experience related to what you’re doing?
- Are you capable of doing a good job at what it is you’re trying to do?

I think that’s another no.

So just because you’re “new” online, doesn’t mean you have to charge nothing.

People are paying you for those experiences- for your skills, your knowledge, your education, your ability to know what to do AND what not to do.

All of that is not free.

If you’re struggling to price your services, send me a message. It’s time to get compensation for what you’re really bringing to the table.
